Bulimba Creek Environment Fund

Protecting Waterways, Bushland & Wildlife

Bulimba Creek is part of Queensland’s Koala Coast and flows into the Ramsar listed Moreton Bay. The catchment is threatened by housing development, roads, powerlines and railways. Yet it still remains home to around 400 species of animals and over 1000 plant species.

The Bulimba Creek Catchment Environment Fund was established to accept tax-deductible donations in support of a community-driven commitment to deliver critical environmental outcomes through community programs.

The environment fund also supports critical work at B4C’s two nature refuges; Mount Elliot and Mount Barney–Yamahra Creek. This includes essential work such as invasive weed control and fire trail maintenance. These refuges are more than just safe havens. They play a vital role in protecting biodiversity and linking habitats—from the Bulimba Creek Catchment all the way to the World Heritage-listed Border Ranges.

The Environment Fund supports a wide range of environmental, citizen science, habitat, and wildlife projects, including:

  • Support for local bushcare groups, helping to build community while restoring habitat and creating vital wildlife corridors.

  • Backing the next generation of bush regenerators through initiatives like Intrepid Landcare and the Gregory River Landcare Twinning Project—engaging young people in hands-on conservation while restoring habitat and enhancing biodiversity.

  • Conservation work at B4C's Nature Refuges at Mt Elliot and Mount Barney, including weed control and fire trail maintenance. We also support neighbouring properties, recognising that wildlife don’t observe property boundaries.

  • Seasonal bird surveys at Gibson Island, Oxbow, and Murarrie Wetlands, in collaboration with BirdLife SEQ, using bird diversity as a key measure of rehabilitation success.

  • Monthly water testing across key sites in the Bulimba Creek Catchment, helping to monitor waterway health.

  • Sponsorship of the Brisbane Catchment Network’s Project Officer, strengthening collaboration and knowledge-sharing among Brisbane’s catchment groups.

  • Support for the Carneys Creek, Maroon, and Woodhill Rural Fire Brigades, located near our nature refuges, acknowledging their vital role as first responders during emergencies.

Other Projects Funded by the Environment Fund

  • Support for the Glider Boxes project by Boonah Landcare, including a significant donation towards enhancing glider habitat at Mt Barney

  • The Native Orchard Project, facilitating the creation of a new display at the B4C Sustainability Centre

  • Engaging guest speaker events that promote environmental education and empower the community to care for local ecosystems

  • Enhancement of wildlife corridors and greening initiatives at Whites Hill College, actively involving students in conservation work

  • Support for habitat enhancement at Yimbun–Conondale through the provision of plants, materials and site preparation

  • Weed control and revegetation maintenance at Gibson Island, contributing to the site’s ecological restoration

  • Ongoing maintenance of the iconic Oxbow site to ensure access and protect its environmental values.
