About Me
Growing up, my mum’s stories planted a seed in me that continues to shape my life today and ultimately led me to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Environmental Science at Griffith University. That seed was simple: a deep love and respect for the natural world. My mum, who was born in Lima, Peru, would share stories of a childhood surrounded by colourful butterflies and dazzling hummingbirds, but how in time, this rich biodiversity would gradually disappear as green spaces gave way to urban expansion in her neighbourhood. Although confronting to hear as a child, these stories allowed me to understand an important lesson from an early age: that our actions have consequences that extend beyond ourselves, and that we have the power to choose whether our impact is a negative one, or a positive one.
With this understanding in mind, I quickly realised that I wanted to be in a line of work where I helped protect the planet, and the incredible biodiversity that we share it with. After graduating from high school, I delved straight into the above dual degree, majoring in Urban and Social Environments. Now in my penultimate year of study, I am grateful I chose to undertake this dual degree, as it has given me the opportunity to explore two unique fields, which when combined will better equip me in tackling real-world issues by nurturing a valuable interdisciplinary perspective. As I have undertaken this degree, the seed mum planted has only flourished, as I’ve learnt about Australia’s unique environmental systems, how they can be sustainably managed, the interface between the management of the environment and the law, and the interactions between people, cities and the natural environment.
With over seven years of work experience and four years of tertiary study experience, I have developed a strong foundation of transferable skills, particularly in communication, organisation, and problem solving, where I have refined my verbal, interpersonal and written skills, have learnt to balance part-time work alongside my studies, and have had the opportunity to navigate challenging situations. I aspire to work in environmental consultancy and policy and am deeply interested in climate change science, with a focus on mitigating its impacts to help conserve the rich biodiversity that calls Australia home. Through my experiences, I adopt an ecocentric worldview, believing that the natural world has intrinsic value that is independent from our experience as human beings, and hence am deeply passionate about working to protect its inherent value.
