Landwatch

Landwatch is understanding land use within a catchment and undertaking actions and campaigns to protect the ecological integrity of natural areas, environmental corridors and the ecosystem services provided by our natural assets like waterways and wildlife movement.
Inappropriate development that impacts on our natural assets must be identified and acted on at the community level.

B4C initiated Landwatch to protect againts these potential impacts in a highly urbanised city creek catchment. B4C has volunteer Landwatch officers for the lower, middle and upper catchment areas who report on and are community advocates around development and environmental issues in their respective regions.

B4C has had substantial success in protecting lands and waterways by initiating development objections, land use planning and land acquisitions and the transfer of quality bushlands from development zonings into parklands and protected land. Over 400 ha have been protected in the catchment by this method.

Latest news:
Lower CatchmentSuccess by Daryl Evans and the Hemmant-Tingalpa Wetlands Conservation Group in securing the final piece of core habitat needed within Bulimba Creek's Lower Catchment, linking other conservation reserves. After 7 years of campaigning and 2.5 years in the Planning and Environment Court, in 2010, an in-principal agreement was reached with regard to the Sunnygold development on Hemmant-Tingalpa Reserve. The outcomes: 96% of high value wetlands and 80% medium and low grade wetland areas are to be retained and fully rehabilitated by the developer over a 3 year period, before being transferred under a conservation covenant to BCC.

Paying attention to the changes in your local area is important for ensuring private developers, governments and other members of the community are doing the best thing by our environment.
If you have seen or heard anything that you believe will have a significant environmental impact on your area, such as development proposals or clearing, please come along to our next Cathment Meeting, or send us an email with the information. We are always in need of more people 'land-watching', if you are interested in taking on this role as an official Catchment Officer or on a less formal basis, please contact B4C.
