B4C Overview

Bulimba Creek Catchment Coordinating Committee (B4C) is a voluntary not-for-profit community-based environmental organisation that is committed to the protection and enhancement of our natural environment. Bulimba Creek Catchment is one of the largest creek catchments in the Brisbane area, covering 122 km2, stretching from the suburbs of Hemmant and Murarrie in the North to Kuraby and Runcorn in the South. Bulimba Creek consists of eight main tributaries and five wetland systems, and flows continuously to the Brisbane River and ultimately Moreton Bay.

B4C’s philosophy holds that communities, government, educational institutions, industry and corporations must work together to make real and positive environmental change. Through these networks, B4C is creating a new self-funded professional direction for catchment management, which ensures sustainability for the organisation, its stakeholders and importantly the environment in which we work and derive our healthy lifestyle.

 The Bulimba Creek Environment Fund

The Bulimba Creek Environment Fund was established to accept tax-deductible donations in support of a community-driven commitment to deliver critical environmental outcomes through socially and ethically sensitive community programs. The Fund enables the B4C to complete the extensive bushland and wildlife protection, rehabilitation and enhancement works, environmental education programs, social and community development initiatives, ecological sustainable urban planning and cultural heritage programs.

Rehabilitation & Habitat CreationRehabilitation & Habitat Creation

Our rehabilitation and habitat works are based on a strategic plan funded by the Natural Heritage Trust. The plan identifies key environmental areas to protect, enhance or rehabilitate, including the conservation of bushlands, wetlands and waterway corridors. To date the plan has been responsible for hundreds of thousands of trees and plants put in the soil.

Biodiversity ProtectionBiodiversity Protection

Unique wildlife and plants are the envy of capital cities throughout the world. We are the biodiversity capital of Australia. We have 523 wildlife species (229 are significant), 1500 native plants (124 are significant). Only a collaborative effort can ensure conservation for this wonderful natural heritage. With your help the fund can make its contribution to save lives and habitats.

Indigenous Cultural Heritage Program

Indigenous Cultural Heritage Program

The fund is currently resourcing a traditional owner and knowledge holder for cultural heritage surveys, rehabilitation consultation and the increase of cultural awareness. The fund employs Shane Coghill who has genealogical connections to the Koenpal and Ueggarah people as well as being formally educated in archaeology and anthropology. Shane is currently conducting cultural heritage surveys on 6 key sites throughout the catchment and has held three community reconciliation workshops

Environmental Conservation FundEnvironmental Conservation Fund

B4C has successfully campaigned for the protection 426 hectares of urban bushland.  The environment fund is committed to protecting urban bushland areas through community education, public awareness campaigns and where necessary legal support. The fund is currently providing financial and administrative support for Minnippi Against Development – a coalition of community and environmental groups actively protecting a 125 hectare bushland, floodplain and wetland system, with Australia’s densest populated squirrel glider colony at Minnippi.

Environmental Education

Environmental Education

The fund is currently funding the delivery of grass roots curriculum-based education experiences by our landcare professionals. These initiatives include the formation of an environmental catchment photo competition, live animal display with wildlife and habitat experts and the construction of school based waterwise gardens in conjunction with the teaching of the principles of sustainability and nature conservation. Weekly primary school presentations and guided catchment bus tours are now undertaken. We could greatly improve this program with further funding.

Social & Community DevelopmentSocial & Community Development

The fund is used to assist the support of long term unemployed and people with disabilities. Through its community nursery and environmental services unit, B4C offers occupational opportunities and training in horticulture, nursery management, fauna habitat creation, waterway/wetland, bushland rehabilitation and management. Training is also given in administration, office management and computers.
