What is Twinning?
(French Translation)
· Twinning provides the basis of partnerships between catchments, individuals and NGOs worldwide to improve river management, environmental care, sustaining of natural resources and the well being of communities.
· Twinning is an initiative of the International Riverfoundation (IRF).
· The IRF supports the annual Brisbane Riversymposium by bringing international and national delegates and scientists to Brisbane. Working with Theiss to provide the National and International Riverprizes.
Twinning at Grass roots level
This differs from the large international projects with substantial
budgets and resources. Our Twinning is at a grass roots level with community inputs and low or non-existent funding. There are community benefits, costs/risks involved.
This is basic information for future twinners to provide advice and cost/risk awareness if they wish to embark on Twinning at a grass roots level.
Benefits Of Twinning:
· Resources, skills and experiences are pooled
· Know how, knowledge and wisdom transfer
· Rehabilitation of degraded catchments
· Cross cultural awareness and enrichment
· New and unexpected knowledge gained for all groups based on their exchange
Costs / risks Of Twinning:
· Time consuming and requires relationship building
· Risk of no demonstrated improvements
· Suggested technology may not be transferable to recipient catchment
· Instability in funding or environment (drought, flooding)
· Incompatibility of partners (Goals, enthusiasm, communication, cultural, etc)
To date, we are working on projects based in Southern Thailand, Far North
Queensland (Sth Gulf Catchments) and France. For updates and latest news see
